Andrade “Cien” Almas versus Sin Cara will take place on the Extreme Rules Kickoff show, WWE announced Friday.
The two have been engaged in a feud over the last little while. After Almas joined the SmackDown LIVE roster via the Superstar Shake-up, Sin Cara approached him, assuming their long-time friendship was still active. However, Almas and his business manager Zelina Vega weren’t interested. The following week, Almas attacked Sin Cara during a backstage interview, giving him a (kayfabe) shoulder injury. Sin Cara returned just over a month later, where he and the former NXT Champion amazed the fans with a high-profile bout. Sin Cara controlled most of the match before Almas rebounded for the victory. The two will now meet at Extreme Rules, in a match that Almas should comfortably win.
As exclusively revealed by Wrestling Standard, this feud was not originally planned to last this long. Almas was supposed to challenge Jeff Hardy for the United States Championship following a brief feud with Sin Cara. However, WWE made a last-minute decision to end the AJ Styles-Shinsuke Nakamura feud early to have Nakamura challenge instead.
Their match Sunday is one of two scheduled for the Kickoff show; the other will see The New Day battle SAnitY in a tables match. The pre-show is set to begin at 6 p.m. ET, with the main show beginning at 7pm. Extreme Rules takes place this Sunday, July 15 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
