These two combatants will throw down for the third time this year.
Brock Lesnar has an opponent for SummerSlam. That man is someone very familiar to him. After defeating Bobby Lashley on this week’s Raw, Roman Reigns earned the right to challenge Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the summer classic.
This will be the third time in 2018 that they’ve faced off for the championship. Lesnar was successful in retaining at WrestleMania 34. A few weeks later at Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Lesnar was again victorious in a Steel Cage match. The finish came with some controversy though, as it appeared Reigns’ feet had hit the ground first following a steel-shattering spear.
The first time these two had a match was back at WrestleMania 31. Lesnar dominated the majority of the match. Reigns, who was fresh off winning the 2015 Royal Rumble match, had his moment of glory stolen from him at the hands of former friend Seth Rollins. The Architect cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase mid-match, making it a triple threat. Rollins pinned Reigns to capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time.
There is much speculation on Lesnar’s status following SummerSlam. At UFC 226, Lesnar got into an altercation with UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier. It was later announced Lesnar had re-entered the USADA drug testing pool. He is eligible to return to the octagon in January 2019. He is rumored to challenge Cormier for his championship shortly after.
All that is known at the moment is that Lesnar will defend against Reigns at SummerSlam. The current Mr. Money in the Bank Braun Strowman will defend his briefcase against Kevin Owens at the same event. Whoever ends up with possession of that contract could walk out of the event as the new world champion. Prior to these matches being set, Strowman was very vocal about taking the title from Lesnar.
